About Garry Stein

This website is being written to share my passions, ideas and experience. I love reading, analysing, teaching and writing. My interests range too widely and I always say that my biggest problem in life is that I would like to be a renaissance man in a time when it is no longer possible to do so! This biography and the attached CV, bibliography and links reflect mainly on my business career. If you want to know who I am beyond that read the various sections of this website.
I am a seasoned executive with strong management, analytical and strategic skills and a track record of success and innovation. I most recently acted as a responsible officer for development of the technology design for a global trade settlement platform. In this role I was instrumental in the strategic planning, design concepts and implementation of modern distributed ledger and related technologies to the issues of global trade. Because of this work, I was able to develop a strong understand and expertise of the impact of Digital Ledger Technology in Fintech, its economic impact and the sociological and regulatory requirements involved in implementation.

Prior to this I have over forty years of experience in executive roles in banking, investment management, mergers & acquisitions, private equity, natural resources and strategic planning. I was actively involved for many years in both inward and outward-bound investing in China and Canada – developing strong relationships in the Chinese and international commodity, mining and finance communities – and have been successful in raising and investing substantial funds internationally for various investment projects, particularly in natural resources. I was a principle in the establishment of and acted as a senior executive at Golden China Resources Corporation, a China focused gold mining company listed on The Toronto and Australian Stock Exchanges, which was subsequently sold. I have also served as an advisor, senior executive and in board roles for a number of public and private companies in North America, Hong Kong, China throughout South East Asia and internationally and am well-known in the Chinese mining community.
I have also successfully managed portfolios as President of a top-performing resource based mutual fund, as head of investments for a Canadian bank with first quartile performance on a US$1 billion plus portfolio, as head of asset/liability management for a major Canadian bank, as manager of a large high-income bond fund and in several other advisory and investment management roles. My work as a manager and advisor covered both public and private markets and advisory roles in funding, acquisitions and mergers, restructuring and strategy across industries as varied as retail fashion, food and beverage, financial services, printing and packaging, manufacturing and more. Several well-known names were clients.
Beside my work in business, I have past careers as a research scientist, teaching finance and investments, as a musician and more. This work has led to a wealth of unique life experiences . I always told my advisory clients that I try to approach business with the analysis of a scientist and the soul of a musician.
I hold a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the Case Institute of Technology of Case Western Reserve University; a Master of Applied Science from the University of Toronto in Metallurgy and Material Science; a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business, York University; and is a fellow of the Institute of Canadian Banking.
