What personal data we collect and why we collect it

We collect a great deal of data on individuals, mostly from public sources on line and at archives around the world.  We do this mainly as part of our genealogical research and include such data on a large family tree hosted at www.ancestry.com and in wirtings on this website.  Such data may include information on residences, birth and death dates, burial information, medical data, DNA information, social security/insurance numbers, photos, and more.  As noted below, external sites we use, such as Ancestry, disclose no personal information on living persons except to individuals authorized to view such information.  Our policy is to grant such viewing access only to relatives and a few select trusted researchers.  In writing about family research, I use the names or information about living persons only with their permission (or that of their parents in the case of minors).

Log files

Like many other Web sites, garrystein.com makes use of log files.  The information inside the log files includes internet protocol (IP) addresses, type of browser, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date/time stamp, referring/exit pages, and number of clicks to analyze trends, administer the site, track user’s movement around the site, and gather demographic information.  IP addresses, and other such information are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
